London to Brighton Bike Ride - 18 June 2023

Ditchling Beacon - the words draw different reactions according to who you ask. Some shrug - no idea what/where; others shrug - they know (and have probably listened to Marquee Moon, with apologies to Memorial Device), but it's an anthill to them; others shudder, either with bad memories or dread. I am the last of these.

More about Ditchling at a later date, but why am I writing about it?

On 18 June, I will be cycling from London to Brighton with 20,000 other people. My motivation is muddled; a combination of a (late) middle aged desire to "tick that off" and finding a way to raise some money to develop Spencer Cricket Club's outreach projects. Spencer is one of London's leading cricket clubs with the biggest junior section in the country (about 1,000 boys and 500 girls), and is keen to encourage new junior (primary school age) members from parts of the local community that are currently under-represented at the club. There is an appetite at the club to correct that, and I stand wholeheartedly behind that.
